Curling And Buckling Shingles: Everything You Need To Know

Colorado is located in North America's humid continental climate zone, making your home prone to heat. Summer temperatures in Denver can reach 88° F on average. With temperatures this high, it's not surprising that our roof receives significant damage. The damage is sometimes accompanied by curling and buckling shingles, which can suggest significant issues with your roof.

However, How Does Buckling Or Curling On Asphalt Shingles Appear?

Buckling occurs when your shingles are pushed upward, as if something is inside them. Furthermore, curling appears as if your shingles are in the shape of a concave, with the corners turned up and the center sinking inside.

Moisture trapped inside your roof deck and underlayment is primarily to blame for these problems. While these flaws are visible from the ground, it is critical to consult a skilled roofing contractor to determine the extent of the damage.

Common Causes Of Buckling And Curling

While we've already said that moisture is a common cause of buckling and curling, let's look at how moisture can become trapped and other reasons.

Moisture: Moisture is a roofing system's worst enemy. If you recently renovated your roof and chose to keep the same roof decking, it could have absorbed moisture prior to roof installation. Moisture causes the decking to sag and the shingles to buckle. It can also cause moisture to be absorbed by your roof underlayment, wrinkling it and forcing asphalt shingles upward.

Poor attic ventilation is one of the other causes of buckling shingles. As heated air and condensation accumulate in your attic, they may cause your asphalt shingles to collapse and curl.

Improper Roof Installation: If your roofer fails to properly nail your shingles, it might result in shingles pulling away and buckling or curling!

Roof Sheathing: If your roof sheathing was not installed with a minimum spacing of 18", it can expand and compress, resulting in buckled shingles.

If you are a homeowner, you should contact Sol Vista Roofing as soon as you discover curling or buckling shingles. We will be able to climb onto your roof, assess it, and determine the source of the damage.

We will allow moisture to exit your roofing system. When the moisture level is balanced, the shingles should lay flat and not return.

Furthermore, if the damage is extensive, we will remove the afflicted shingles and repair the wrinkled felt so that it lays level on the roof.

Moreover, we will inspect your roof ventilation to ensure that it meets the minimum standards outlined in the manufacturer's instructions. We may also install new vents as needed to ensure optimum ventilation in your attic and roof.

The adage "prevention is better than cure" also applies to your roofing system. To prevent shingles from buckling and curling, make sure your roof decking wood material is approved by roofing manufacturers and has been properly conditioned to be moisture balanced.

Never let your decking material come into contact with water before or after installation. Furthermore, to avoid moisture under your shingles, always use asphalt shingle felt underlayment that meets industry standards.

If your asphalt shingle has begun to buckle or curl, it is advisable to contact Sol Vista Roofing to have it inspected and fixed. We will assess the degree of the damage and propose a solution to repair your roof to its original condition.
