Updated: Sep 20, 2022

Are you facing problems with your commercial roof and are unsure how to proceed with repairs or replacement? You're not alone, so don't worry. The first thing you should do is schedule a roof check with a local roofing company. This will provide you with a better idea of the roof's present condition, repair options, and expected lifespan. If it is found that you require a new roofing system, it can be quite costly. This is why roof coverings are so appealing. You can often prolong the life of your roof by up to 20 years with commercial roof coatings, at a fraction of the expense of commercial roof replacement!

Ecodur Commercial Roof Coatings By Castagra

There are several alternatives available when it comes to commercial roof coatings. Catasgra's Ecodur product is one that has recently received increasing notice. The invention was born out of a desire to provide a feasible solution that did not rely on the usage of plastic. Plastics, which are mostly made from petroleum, may be costly to both the economy and the environment.

Castagra co-founder Peter Noosen has been looking for a more environmentally friendly alternative for a long time. Peter wanted to employ readily available raw ingredients, and he eventually discovered that a combination of gypsum and castor oil produced a highly effective waterproofing coating. Plastics are far less widely accessible, sustainable, and environmentally benign than gypsum and castor oil. This is especially significant in light of the supply chain problems that have occurred as a result of COVID.

Other commercial roof coatings have issues such as how long they take to cure after installation, how hard they cure, and, in certain circumstances, toxicity. Ecodur roof coating from Castagra has been used in a variety of industries. It has already been used to coat a $300,000,000 fracking vessel, a construction water-retention pond, commercial parking garages, and other non-roofing applications.

The ship deck coating was the true proof of concept that propelled Castagra's Ecodur range into the spotlight. Ship decks have always faced the problem of how to protect the vessel's deck from traffic, sudden changes in weather, and salt water. After a year of research, Ecodur was shown to be the most effective!

Environmentally Safe Roof Coating

The fundamental goal for the development of Ecodur, as previously stated, was to discover a more ecologically friendly approach to coat various surfaces. Ecodur by Castagra is not only environmentally sustainable, but also NSF61 approved. How does this affect you? It signifies there are no harmful substances that need to be regarded during or after the application.

In fact, it can be used to distribute drinking water without the risk of contamination! It's vital to remember that this has no detrimental influence on the roof coating's integrity. According to Castagra, over 10,000 tests have been undertaken to show the performance of their Ecodur roof coating and to continually enhance it. Waterproofing testing, long-term UV tests, saltwater immersion tests, chemical resistance tests, abrasion tests, and fire resistance tests are only a few examples of the tests.

In the end, while Castagra Ecodur roof coatings are environmentally friendly, they are also more durable than other roof coating options. Ecodur is UV-resistant and waterproof, allowing it to tolerate endless ponding water. Ecodur also attaches to existing roof surfaces far more better than other types of roof coatings, and cures into a hard final surface that can withstand practically any debris that falls onto the roof.

Environmentally Friendly Composition

The successful mix of gypsum and castor oil for creating an environmentally friendly coating! Plaster, drywall, blackboards, and chalk all include gypsum. In the agricultural industry, it is commonly used as a fertiliser. Gypsum makes sense for commercial roofing systems because of its inherent qualities that assist insulate, fire resistance, and impact resistance! This is particularly significant in parts of the United States where extreme weather, such as hail storms, is a concern.

The oil from the seed of the Ricinus communis plant is used to make castor oil. Because of its non-toxic nature, this vegetable oil is frequently used in cosmetic goods. Combining this with gypsum has shown to be successful for Castagra's Ecodur roof coating!

What To Expect From A Castagra Ecodur Installation

The first step is to clean any loose debris from the roof. A tour and a short sweep of the roof's surface are usually sufficient. Make sure to spend some extra time in locations with penetrations, curbs, and other obstacles.

After that, keep an eye out for any accumulation, such as grease or caked-on dirt. In most cases, a power wash isn't essential, but in some circumstances, it could be smart. In locations where there is buildup, a wire brush might be useful.

Remove any loose material with a leaf blower once these procedures are completed.

We recommend going over the area again to make sure there is no loose debris and that all areas are dry, clean and tight.

Detailing And Premixing Process

Castagra Ecodur has the potential to heal fast once applied, which is one of its advantages. Given the short pot life of the coating, having all relevant tools on hand and your team members working together is essential.

We'll set up a mixing station with a tarp and many industrial mixing buckets once that's done. This is a crucial step to guarantee uniformity and good application throughout.

We'll add component B to the premix after part A is homogeneous.

We then cover parapets, curbs, and other penetrations with rollers, brushes, and other applicators. We cover vent pipes to about a one-inch depth within the pipe, and HVAC and sunlight curbs to about a 14-inch depth.

After that, we'll start applying the Castagra Ecodur coating to the rest of the roof's surface. Any pooling areas should be given special care.

Topcoat

Ecodur will need to cure overnight if your commercial roof demands a topcoat. A follow-up appointment for the topcoat application would be planned in this case. Ecodur is compatible with a variety of topcoats, including silicone, acrylic, and Castagra's Soladur.

Warranty

Following the completion of your roof coating project, a Castagra representative will evaluate the work to ensure that it satisfies the company's warranty criteria. With an authorised manufacturer inspection, Castagra certified applicators can offer 10 and 20 year no-dollar-limit ("NDL") warranties. Another coat may be put at the conclusion of the 10 or 20 year guarantee period to prolong the warranty even further and increase the life of the current roof!

How Do You Pick The Right Commercial Roof Coating?

With so many alternatives on the market, selecting a commercial roof coating that meets the demands of your unique structure is critical. To assess your roof and choose the best option for your roof coating project, we always recommend contacting a professional and insured commercial roofing contractor.
